What R-410A and R-454B actually are
Both are blends of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants designed to absorb heat in your evaporator coil and release it in your condenser. R-410A is a 50/50 blend of R-32 and R-125 — a Class A1 refrigerant (non-toxic, non-flammable). R-454B is a blend of R-32 (68.9%) and R-1234yf (31.1%) — a Class A2L refrigerant (mildly flammable, very low ignition risk under normal conditions). The performance characteristics are similar enough that R-454B equipment delivers comparable cooling capacity and efficiency, with significantly lower global warming impact.
Why the change is happening

Why R-454B can't go in an R-410A system

Pouring R-454B into an R-410A condenser would damage the compressor, void any warranties, and create safety risks the equipment wasn't designed for. Reclaimed and recycled R-410A will be available for years. A working 7-year-old R-410A unit shouldn't be replaced today just because the refrigerant is being phased out of new manufacturing. 05 Is R-454B more efficient than R-410A?
