01 Step 1

Inputs: the building envelope

Manual J starts with the home's thermal envelope. Wall construction and R-value (R-13 fiberglass batts versus R-21 spray foam), ceiling/attic R-value, floor insulation, window count and U-factor (single-pane at U-1.0 versus modern low-E at U-0.30), door types, and air infiltration rate. Each component contributes a calculable heat loss in winter and gain in summer. A west-facing single-pane window in Evansville gains heat at a wildly different rate than a north-facing low-E window — and Manual J accounts for both.

02 Step 2

Inputs: climate and orientation

Southwest Indiana's design conditions are roughly 10°F heating and 92°F dry bulb / 75°F wet bulb cooling for our area — the temperatures we use to size for. Orientation matters: south- and west-facing rooms gain far more solar load in summer. Internal gains — people, refrigerators, computers, lighting — add up faster than people expect, especially in a kitchen with a stove and dishwasher running. All these inputs feed the room-by-room calculation that becomes your sizing answer.

03 Step 3

Output: room-by-room and whole-house BTU loads

The calculation produces a heating load in BTUs/hour at design winter conditions and a cooling load (sensible + latent) in BTUs/hour at design summer conditions, for each room and for the whole house. That's how we know whether your home actually needs a 60 kBTU 96 AFUE furnace or an 80, and a 2.5-ton or 3-ton AC. It's also how we identify rooms that are starved or over-served by the current duct layout — the load tells us how much air each room actually needs.

04 Step 4

From Manual J to Manual S and Manual D

Manual J answers 'how much capacity.' Manual S answers 'which specific piece of equipment delivers that capacity at our design conditions' — because a 3-ton Carrier Infinity at 92°F doesn't put out the same as a 3-ton Goodman in the same conditions, and Manual S uses the manufacturer's extended performance data to match the J number. Manual D then sizes ducts to deliver the right CFM to each room based on its load. The three together produce a real install. Skip any of them and the system underperforms — usually with the homeowner blaming the equipment.

02 How long does a Manual J take?
