How UV germicidal lights work in HVAC

A UV germicidal light is a low-pressure mercury lamp that emits ultraviolet-C radiation at 254 nanometers, the wavelength that disrupts the DNA of microorganisms and prevents them from reproducing. When UV on the coil makes obvious sense

Every air conditioning evaporator coil in our climate is, by physics, a wet aluminum surface in a dark warm box for six months a year. That is an ideal mold and bacteria substrate. Without UV, every coil we pull for a deep clean has a biological film — sometimes black, sometimes pink, sometimes just gray. That film insulates the coil, hurts heat transfer 5-15%, and is itself a constant emitter of spore fragments into your supply air. A coil-sterilization lamp eliminates the film entirely. For a humid SW Indiana home, this is the easiest IAQ recommendation we give.

What we actually see in Ohio Valley systems

We pull a lot of coils. The pattern is consistent: a homeowner who calls because their system "isn't cooling like it used to," we measure, we pull the coil, and there is a quarter inch of slimy biofilm that has been there for years. The system was technically working but losing significant capacity to the film. We clean it, install a UV lamp pointed at the coil, and the next year's maintenance call finds the coil clean. The math is obvious. We have systems with 10+ years of UV that have never needed another deep coil clean.

When in-airstream UV is worth considering

Airstream UV — lamps placed in the supply duct to disinfect air passing through — is real but the engineering is hard. A pathogen needs a certain dose (lamp intensity × exposure time) to be neutralized, and at 1,200 CFM moving through a duct, the exposure time is measured in fractions of a second. Some PCO and ionization hybrid systems (Lennox PureAir, RGF Reme) extend the effect by generating ions that travel into the airstream and onto surfaces. These work, with documented testing, but the cost is higher and they are not the right answer for every house. We recommend them mainly for households with immunocompromised members or specific bioaerosol concerns.

When UV is overkill

If you do not have humidity above 55%, your coil is reasonably new and clean, no one in the household is immunocompromised, and you do not have visible mold issues, UV is not a priority. Better filtration and humidity control will give you more measurable IAQ improvement per dollar. We will not recommend UV to a homeowner whose actual problem is dust mites in the bedroom or VOCs from new flooring — different problems need different fixes. That is the honest math.

01 Step 1

Why 254 nm specifically

UV light is a band of wavelengths from 100 to 400 nm. The 254 nm wavelength is absorbed strongly by DNA and RNA and breaks the bonds in the molecule, which prevents the organism from reproducing. It does not "kill" instantly in the cellular sense — but a microorganism that cannot reproduce dies of natural causes within hours and cannot start a colony. Low-pressure mercury lamps produce 254 nm efficiently and inexpensively, which is why almost every residential UV lamp is mercury-based. There are newer LED UV-C technologies but they are not yet cost-competitive for HVAC.

02 Step 2

Dose, distance, and the coil-mounted advantage

Lamp effectiveness is dose: intensity × time. A coil-mounted lamp gets continuous exposure on a stationary surface, so even a modest lamp accumulates massive dose over a 24/7 operating cycle. That is why a $400 coil lamp is so effective at keeping a coil clean — the contact time is infinite. An airstream lamp has air rushing past in fractions of a second, so it needs much higher intensity or longer dwell distance to get the same effective dose. Most consumer-grade "airstream UV" lamps don't actually deliver enough dose to neutralize most pathogens at typical airflow rates.

03 Step 3

Lamp lifespan and the maintenance trap

UV-C lamps degrade slowly. The visible glow comes from a small phosphor coating and stays on long after the 254 nm output has dropped below useful levels. Most quality lamps are rated 9,000-17,000 hours (1-2 years of 24/7 operation), and output is meaningfully below spec by the end of that window. We schedule UV bulb replacement at 12-24 months depending on the system, because a lamp that looks fine but isn't outputting useful UV is worse than no lamp — the homeowner believes they're protected when they aren't. This is the part the original installer often skips.

04 Step 4

Where the lamp physically goes

For coil sterilization the lamp mounts in the return-side or supply-side blower section, pointed directly at the coil face. The reflective aluminum amplifies effective dose. For airstream UV the lamp is usually in the supply duct just downstream of the coil. PCO and ionization hybrid systems add a TiO2 catalyst plate (PCO) or ion-generating cell (RGF Reme, iWave) to extend the disinfection beyond the lamp itself. Installation matters — a poorly placed lamp casts shadows that leave parts of the coil untreated.

Failure mode 01

Buying UV and never replacing the bulb

The most common failure we see is a UV system installed five or seven years ago that has never had a bulb change. The bulb is still glowing softly but 254 nm output is essentially zero. The coil has been slowly recolonizing for the past three years and the homeowner has no idea. The fix is a $80-150 bulb on a recurring schedule, the same way you change a furnace filter. If your installer didn't put you on a bulb-replacement plan, your UV is on borrowed time.

Trusting UV marketing claims about viruses

After 2020 the UV market filled up with "kills 99.9% of COVID" marketing claims that were tested under conditions nothing like a real HVAC system. Some lab tests use lamp intensities you cannot reproduce in a duct, contact times you cannot reproduce in moving air, and surfaces that are not airborne pathogens. The honest answer is: residential UV makes your coil cleaner and your air handler healthier, and may modestly reduce some airborne pathogens. It is not a substitute for ventilation, filtration, or vaccines, and any installer who tells you it is should be politely shown the door.

A two-lamp system or a PCO/ionization hybrid (Lennox PureAir, RGF Reme HALO) runs $1,200-2,200 installed. Bulb replacement is $80-150 every 12-24 months. We don't push the most expensive option — we recommend based on what your house actually needs.

02 Will UV ruin my HVAC components?

UV-C degrades plastics and certain rubbers over time. A properly installed lamp is positioned so its direct output hits the metal coil, not the surrounding plastic blower housing or flexible duct. Most quality installations also use UV-resistant components in the immediate area. Done right, the lifetime impact on HVAC parts is minimal. Done wrong — lamps pointed at flex duct or condensate pan — you'll get brittle plastic in a few years.

03 Do I still need to change my filter if I have UV?

Absolutely yes. UV does nothing to dust, pollen, pet dander, or any of the non-biological particulate matter the filter catches. UV and filtration are complementary, not substitutes. A house with high-MERV filtration and coil UV gets the best of both — particles trapped by the filter, biology controlled at the coil.

04 Can UV help with mold in my house?

It can help control mold on the coil, which is one common source of airborne mold spores. It does nothing for mold growing in the bathroom, basement, attic, or behind drywall — those need source remediation (humidity control, leak fixes, sometimes abatement). If you have a visible mold problem, UV on the coil is part of the answer but not the whole answer. The whole answer starts with finding and stopping the moisture.

05 Is UV safe to be around?

Inside a sealed HVAC system, yes — the UV is fully contained. The danger is during service: UV-C will cause skin and eye burns ("welder's flash") in seconds of unprotected exposure. Every quality system has a safety switch that kills the lamp when the access panel opens. We train our techs to verify that switch on every visit. Do not stare into an operating UV lamp.
