When this question matters
Most folks don't know they have an anode rod, let alone that it needs to be checked. The question typically comes up when they read about it online, when a plumber pulls one and shows them the wreckage during a service call, or when a 7-year-old tank starts showing signs of failure they could have prevented. The single best time to ask is year 3 of a new water heater — the tank is still healthy, the original anode is partially consumed but easy to remove (not yet rust-welded), and you can decide whether to replace with the same type, a powered anode, or a different material.

What we actually pull out of SW Indiana tanks
In Vanderburgh and Gibson county water, a stock magnesium anode rod typically comes out at year 4 to 5 looking like a thin wire with intermittent ribbons of remaining material — sometimes just bare core wire. In softened-water homes the rod is often completely gone by year 3, with just the threaded plug left. The anode rod's job is to give itself up to save the tank, and ours absolutely do. The good news is that's the whole point — that consumed rod is a tank that didn't rust. The bad news is if nobody replaces the rod once it's gone, the tank itself takes over the corrosion duty.

How softened water changes the schedule
Softened water swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, which is far better for the tank itself (no scale on the burner plate, no popping noises, no glass-lining stress). The trade-off is that sodium-ion water is slightly more conductive, which accelerates anode-rod consumption. In SW Indiana, a magnesium rod in softened water is often gone in 18 to 30 months — half its normal life. If you have a softener, switch to aluminum/zinc rods (which last longer in soft water) or consider a powered anode that doesn't get consumed at all.

When a powered anode is worth it
A powered or impressed-current anode uses a small plug-in transformer to provide the protective current that a sacrificial rod provides chemically. It doesn't get consumed, doesn't need replacement for the life of the tank, eliminates the sulfur smell some homeowners get on magnesium rods, and costs $150 to $300 installed. For a tank you plan to keep 10+ years — or one that smells like sulfur — a powered anode is one of the better upgrades available. We sell and install Corro-Protec, the most common residential option. How galvanic corrosion actually protects the tank
Inside the tank, two different metals (the steel tank lining and the anode rod) are connected through the water, which acts as an electrolyte. Different metals have different electrochemical potentials, and when connected through an electrolyte, the more active metal (magnesium or aluminum) corrodes preferentially — giving up electrons that flow to the steel and protect it. The anode is literally taking the corrosion that would otherwise happen to the tank. This is the same principle used to protect ship hulls, underground pipelines, and water towers. As long as the active anode metal is there, the tank stays protected.
Why magnesium vs aluminum vs zinc matters
Magnesium gives the strongest protection (most negative electrochemical potential) and the cleanest taste — but it gets consumed fastest and can produce a sulfur smell in some water chemistries due to bacterial reactions. Aluminum/zinc rods (the AZ rod) last longer, resist sulfur production, and work well in softened water, but the protection is slightly weaker. Zinc-only is rare. The right choice depends on your water: if you smell sulfur on your hot water, switch from magnesium to AZ; if you have softened water, AZ generally; if neither, magnesium is the textbook choice. Most tanks ship with magnesium from the factory.
How a powered anode breaks the cycle
A powered anode uses an external 12-volt power supply to drive a small protective current through a titanium rod (which doesn't get consumed). The titanium rod creates the same electrochemical protection as a sacrificial anode, but because the protective current comes from the wall outlet instead of from rod consumption, the rod lasts decades. The trade-off is the dependency on the small transformer continuing to work — a power outage briefly exposes the tank, but a single-night outage doesn't matter. For a tank that's still in good shape internally, swapping in a powered anode is one of the cleanest ways to extend life dramatically.

The tank doesn't tell you it's losing protection — it just starts corroding when the anode is gone, and the corrosion is invisible until water shows up on the floor. We pull tanks all the time where the homeowner had no idea there was an anode at all, and the tank lasted exactly until the moment the rod was fully consumed. The math is brutal: a $40 part replaced at year 4 buys 5+ more years of tank life; the alternative is a $1,500 to $2,500 new tank install. What goes wrong if the rod is stuck
The anode plug is at the top of the tank, often torqued in at the factory, and after 5 years in hot water it can be genuinely stuck. The wrong tools — a cheap socket wrench with a long cheater bar — can twist the plug, crack the lining, or worse. The right way involves a proper impact wrench, sometimes a second person bracing the tank, and sometimes accepting that the rod is stuck and routing protection through a powered anode instead. We've recovered jobs where the homeowner snapped the rod off in the tank trying to DIY it — that one's harder to fix.

01 How do I know if my water heater even has an anode rod?
Every residential glass-lined steel tank water heater has at least one anode rod — it's a code and design requirement. Look at the top of the tank for a hex-head plug (typically 1-1/16 inch), often hidden under a plastic cap labeled 'anode' or just blank. Some newer high-efficiency tanks have the anode integrated into the hot water outlet (a 'combo rod'). Tankless and hybrid heat pump water heaters work differently and may not have one. If you can't find it, snap a photo of the top of your tank and we'll tell you over the phone.
02 Can I check the anode rod myself?
If you're comfortable with tools, yes. Shut power or gas off, close the cold inlet, open a hot tap to relieve pressure, drain 1-2 gallons from the tank, then remove the anode plug with a 1-1/16 inch socket and a breaker bar (sometimes an impact wrench is needed). What you'll see ranges from a healthy rod (mostly intact, some surface pitting) to a wire-core remnant. If less than half the rod by diameter remains, replace it. Reinstall with new pipe-thread tape and torque to manufacturer spec.
03 Will replacing the anode get rid of the sulfur smell in my hot water?
Often yes. The 'rotten egg' smell usually comes from bacteria interacting with the magnesium rod's sulfate by-products. Switching from magnesium to an aluminum/zinc rod, or to a powered anode, eliminates that reaction in most cases. We sometimes recommend also shock-chlorinating the tank when switching rods to kill the existing bacteria — otherwise the smell can persist for weeks. About 9 times out of 10 this combination clears the smell completely.
04 What if my tank is already 10+ years old — is it too late?
Probably yes — at year 10+, the internal corrosion has likely already started even if there's no visible leak yet. Replacing the anode at that point is closing the barn door after the horse left. The honest move is to plan for tank replacement on your schedule (and put a fresh anode-check reminder on the new tank). The exception is if you've been diligent about annual flushing and the tank has clearly been well-maintained — sometimes a 10-year-old tank with good care has another 5 years.
05 Are powered anodes worth the extra cost?
For a tank you plan to keep more than 5 more years, yes. The math: $150 to $300 for a powered anode that lasts the rest of the tank's life vs. replacing a sacrificial rod every 3 to 5 years at $50 to $100 a pop. Add the sulfur-smell elimination and the fact that the powered rod won't seize in place, and powered anodes are usually the better long-term call. For a tank already at year 8+, just plan the replacement instead.
