Why the anode rod is the whole game

Inside every tank water heater is a sacrificial anode rod — usually magnesium or aluminum — bolted into the top of the tank. Its job is to corrode instead of the steel tank around it, through a process called galvanic corrosion. Hard water and softened water both accelerate that corrosion, just in different ways. In SW Indiana, a stock anode rod typically lasts 3 to 5 years; in a home with a softener, it can be gone in 2. Once that rod is consumed, the next thing to corrode is the tank wall itself, and you have maybe 6 to 18 months before the leak. Replacing it is a 45-minute job that extends tank life by 5+ years.

How sediment kills a tank from underneath

Every gallon of hard water that enters the tank deposits a tiny amount of calcium and magnesium. Over years, that builds into a layer of sediment that sits on the bottom of the tank — directly above the burner on a gas unit, or around the lower element on electric. The popping sound an older tank makes is steam bubbles forming under that sediment layer. The serial number on the rating plate (the sticker on the side of the tank) encodes the manufacture date. On Bradford White it's the first two characters — a letter for the year and a letter for the month. On Rheem and Rinnai the first four digits of the serial are the week and year. If you cannot decode it, snap a photo of the plate and we will tell you over the phone for free. Anything older than 8 years gets the full conversation about whether to replace on your schedule.

02 Is a tankless water heater worth it in Southwest Indiana?

For most 3+ person households with hard water, yes — but only if you commit to the annual descale. A quality Rinnai or Navien unit installed properly will outlast two tank water heaters and never run out of hot water, which matters for families with teenagers or anyone with a large soaking tub. The catch is the upfront cost (typically $1,500 to $3,000 more than tank) and the maintenance commitment. Brand and model honestly matter less than people think — a well-maintained mid-tier tank will outlive a neglected premium one every time. The fourth reason, which is sneakier, is high incoming water pressure (over 80 PSI) stressing the tank and the relief valve.

05 Should I replace before it fails or wait until it leaks?

Replace before it fails, especially if the tank is in a finished basement, in an attic, or above any living space. The cost of the tank is roughly fixed; the cost of water damage is unbounded.
