Will a heat pump actually heat my house when it is below zero?

A modern cold-climate heat pump can hold meaningful capacity into single digits — but on a -12°F polar vortex morning, you will be running backup heat for those few hours. That is normal and designed for. The question is whether the backup is electric strip or gas furnace.

Is dual-fuel better than all-electric here?

For most homes that already have gas, yes. Dual-fuel lets the heat pump run efficiently down to a balance point (often 30–35°F), then hands off to the gas furnace for the coldest stretches. Lowest operating cost for our climate, in our experience.

How much will a heat pump save me vs. gas?

Honest answer: it depends on your current gas rate, your electric rate, and how cold your winter runs. We will pull the last 12 months of bills, run the math at current Vectren/CenterPoint and Duke rates, and show you the projection — no rosy assumptions.

Do heat pumps work with my existing ductwork?

Usually yes — but heat pumps move more air than furnaces at a lower delta T. If your ducts are undersized, you will feel it as cool drafts. We measure static pressure before quoting so we know if the ducts can keep up.
