This question usually surfaces three ways: 'my shower lost its punch over the last few months,' 'one bathroom is fine but another is weak,' or 'pressure dropped suddenly and never came back.' Each one points to a completely different cause, which is why a phone-call diagnosis from a stranger isn't reliable. A gradual drop is almost always a PRV or scale; a sudden drop is almost always a leak or a sediment dislodged from a water-main work in your neighborhood; a single-fixture drop is almost always that fixture's aerator or supply stop. Start there before you call.

How to do a 5-minute pressure check yourself
Buy a $12 pressure gauge with a hose thread at any hardware store. Screw it onto the outside hose bib closest to the meter, open the bib fully, and read the static pressure. Anything between 50 and 70 PSI is normal. Below 45 PSI, you've got a real upstream problem (PRV or main). Above 80 PSI, you're slowly damaging the water heater, the washer hoses, and every supply stop in the house — a PRV is needed urgently. Then run a few fixtures inside the house and watch the gauge — a big pressure drop while running fixtures means a restriction or undersized supply, not a pressure problem.

Why one bathroom can be fine and another weak
If pressure is great at the kitchen and weak at the upstairs shower, the issue is between the kitchen and the upstairs shower — not the city main, not the PRV, and not the water heater. The usual suspects are a clogged shower head (10 minutes in vinegar fixes most), a partially-closed supply stop under the sink or behind the toilet, or scale built up in the cartridge of a single-handle shower valve. Galvanized pipe still in service can also throttle flow to a single branch while leaving others fine. Don't pay for a whole-house diagnosis when the issue is a $4 aerator.

How a pressure-reducing valve works
Most municipal water mains in SW Indiana run at 80 to 120 PSI — too high for household plumbing, which is rated for 80 PSI maximum. The PRV is a spring-loaded valve that throttles the incoming water down to a setpoint, typically 60 to 70 PSI. Inside the valve is a diaphragm that flexes against the spring; as downstream pressure rises, the diaphragm pushes the valve toward closed. When the diaphragm gets stiff (age) or the spring weakens, the valve drifts low and your whole house pressure drops gradually over months. It's a $200 to $400 part to replace and a 60-to-90-minute job done right.
How hard water scales the inside of pipes
Calcium carbonate and magnesium scale don't just affect water heaters — they coat the inside of every copper, PEX, and brass surface the hot water touches. Over 15 to 25 years, scale can reduce the effective inside diameter of a ½-inch supply line from .5 inches to .35 inches, which cuts flow roughly in half at the same pressure. That's why old homes with the original copper feel like the pressure is dying even when the city pressure is fine. Cold lines scale far slower than hot lines, which is why the hot side often feels weaker than the cold.
How a hidden leak shows up at the gauge
A constant slow leak — a running toilet flapper, a slab leak, a buried supply line under the front yard — pulls pressure down anywhere the leak is upstream of your gauge. The diagnostic trick is to shut every fixture in the house off, then watch the water meter dial. If it's still creeping, you've got a leak. Static pressure should hold rock-steady; if your gauge bleeds down 2 to 5 PSI per minute with everything off, water is escaping somewhere. 01 What's the ideal household water pressure?
Between 50 and 70 PSI measured static at an outside hose bib. Below 45 PSI and you'll feel weak showers and slow-filling washing machines; above 80 PSI and you're damaging fixtures, hoses, and the water heater. Most homes are happiest in the 55-to-65 PSI range. If you're running well water with a pressure tank, you'll see the gauge cycle between a lower and upper setpoint — typically 40/60 or 50/70 — and that's normal.
02 How do I know if I have a pressure-reducing valve?
Look at the main water supply line just after it enters your house. A PRV is a brass, bell-shaped valve with a screwdriver adjustment on top, usually 4 to 6 inches long. If you don't see one and your house is on city water, you may not have one — which is sometimes fine (if city pressure is moderate) and sometimes a problem (if it's 95+ PSI). A quick pressure gauge test at the hose bib will tell you whether you need one.
03 Can a water softener cause low pressure?
Yes, in two ways. A softener that needs regeneration or has a clogged resin bed restricts flow during peak use — you'll notice it most when multiple fixtures run. A softener bypass valve that's partially closed will throttle the whole house. If the softener is older than 12 years and undersized for the actual hardness, it can lose capacity and start passing scale. Bypass the softener temporarily and re-test pressure — that isolates it as the cause in 5 minutes.
04 Why does pressure drop when I run multiple fixtures?
Some drop is normal — running two showers at once will always show a few PSI drop. But a big drop (15+ PSI) means the supply system can't keep up, which usually points to undersized main piping, scale-restricted lines, a partially-closed shutoff valve somewhere, or a failing PRV. The static pressure can look fine on the gauge while the dynamic flow is terrible. That's why we always test both.
05 Should I be worried about galvanized pipes?
If your house is pre-1970 and still has any original galvanized steel supply lines, yes — they rust closed from the inside and will eventually throttle flow to a trickle. The rust also adds iron and color to your water. Most homes by now have been at least partially repiped with copper or PEX, but we still find original galvanized in basements and crawl spaces in older Evansville and Princeton neighborhoods. A partial repipe — just the worst sections — is often more economical than a whole-house repipe.
